Leah, the Unloved Wife

Mini Lesson # 3
Thus far we’ve talked about Leah’s appearance verses Rachel’s appearance and about the possibility of sibling rivalry between the two sisters. In lesson # 3 we meet a young man that will turn their world upside down and at times pit sister against sister.
Enter Jacob, an eligible bachelor, into Leah and Rachel’s lives.
Genesis 29 gives us the account of Jacob and Rachel’s first meeting. Verse 14 tells us that Jacob stayed with Rachel’s family one month and then in verse 18 we find him declaring his love for her.
And Laban said to him, "Surely you are my bone and my flesh," And he stayed with him for one month. Then Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me what should your wages be?" ... Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter." And Laban said, "It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me" So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her. Genesis 29: 14-15, 18-20
How do you think Leah felt when she realized that Jacob, after having been there for such a short period of time, preferred her sister over her? Could this have been a source of sibling rivalry between the two sisters?
Fast forward 7 years and we find that there’s going to be a wedding. Jacob and Rachel are getting married! How do you think Leah, the older, less attractive, and as of yet … still unmarried sister feels on this day?
All seems to be going well on this special day, in fact a feast is in progress, when Laban, Leah and Rachel’s father, puts a devious plan into action that changes everything … that’s where we’ll begin in our next lesson.
